The Wig Caps I Choose and Why They Matter
The cap construction is one of the biggest reasons a wig looks natural, feels comfortable and sits beautifully
on the head.
At The Wig Design Room, I gravitate towards wig caps that I feel give the most realistic, soft and comfortable
result, while still offering clients choice depending on their needs, lifestyle and budget.
Lace Top / Lace Front Wig Caps
A lace top and lace front wig cap gives one of the most natural-looking hairlines. The lace front allows the hair to look as though it is growing softly from the scalp, creating a beautifully realistic finish around the face.
This type of cap is wonderful for clients who want a very natural front hairline, especially if they like the option of wearing the hair softly away from the face.
Lace does need to be treated with care, as it is delicate. It should not be pulled, scratched, cut incorrectly or
handled roughly, as this can damage the lace over time.
Silk Top Wig Caps
A silk top wig gives a very realistic scalp appearance through the top area of the wig. The silk parting creates the look of hair growing naturally from the scalp, giving a soft and believable finish on top.
The front hairline can still look very natural, but a silk top wig is not always as suitable for wearing completely away from the face in the same way as a lace front. It is often best worn with some softness or styling around the front.
Fully Hand-Tied Wig Caps
A fully hand-tied wig is one of the most comfortable and luxurious cap options. These wigs are usually made with a lace top and no wefting, meaning each hair is individually tied by hand.
This creates beautiful movement, softness and comfort against the scalp. Fully hand-tied wigs can be especially lovely for clients with sensitive scalps or medical hair loss. Because they take much longer for the maker to create, fully hand-tied wigs are a higher-cost option.
Lace Top With Wefted Sides and Back
A regular lace top wig usually has lace through the top area, with wefting through the sides and back. This can still give a very natural look through the top and parting area, while keeping the wig lighter, breathable and more cost-effective than a fully hand-tied cap. This can be a great choice for clients who want realism through the top, but do not necessarily need a fully hand-tied construction.
Stock and Custom Options
I do carry some of these premium cap types in stock, but many clients need a degree of customisation depending on their head size, colour choice, length, density and comfort needs.
Customised pieces usually take around 3–4 weeks, depending on the order and maker availability.
During your consultation, I will guide you through the cap options and explain what will work best for your hair loss, lifestyle, comfort and the look you want to achieve.
Let’s Clear Things Up
A lace top or lace front gives one of the most natural-looking hairlines — the lace lets the hair look as though it's growing softly from the scalp, for a beautifully realistic finish around the face. A silk top creates a very realistic scalp appearance through the parting on top. The right choice depends on whether you like to wear the hair away from the face or with a little softness around the front, which we'll talk through at your consultation.
A fully hand-tied wig is one of the most comfortable and luxurious options — each hair is individually tied by hand, with a lace top and no wefting. That creates beautiful movement, softness and comfort against the scalp, which makes it especially lovely for sensitive scalps or medical hair loss. Because it takes the maker much longer to create, it's a higher-cost option — so it's worth it for some clients, while a lace top with wefted sides and back gives realism through the top at a lighter, more cost-effective price.
